No! Helpmeet does not mean Doormat. Get the facts!

Does the word helpmeet scare you? or gets you annoyed? Do you have more questions than answers?

Do you think that it has no relevance today?

Maybe, you are unsure of how to feel about this the word, helpmeet...

Let’s take a walk together- let’s look at what it means. It's time to get radical and intentional.

Ditch the World’s Perspective

The FIRST thing you need to do is DITCH the World’s perspective on this Word.

The world says helper means inferior and subordinate. It says woman is made to be less than man or subservient to her husband. The woman, no the wife, is oppressed and repressed and relegated to keeping house. A doormat who has very little input in real decision making.

I would say as Kingdom women, ditch the World’s perspective on this godly concept. Even more than that, ditch it because it devalues this godly role that God has set aside for you, woman.

In God’s design He created man and then woman to have a unique partnership with Him God at the centre of it all.

Having created man and woman He gave each purpose in the relationship that would thrive and be an example upon the earth of true unity and balance.

But there has often been a struggle between the man and his woman-one wants to rule while the one who got the charge to rule sometimes does a horrible job.

Lady, God created you for relationship, and He gave you a powerful position in it.

Oftentimes the woman’s role is seen as secondary and unimportant but I don’t believe that’s what God intended.

This is how God did it,

Genesis 2:7 says, then the Lord God formed [that is, created the body of] man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living being [an individual complete in body and spirit]

God then proceeded to plant the Garden of Eden which He then put Adam to manage. Eden was wonderful- a place of happiness, a delight. So, Adam was good right? No, he wasn’t.

Hear this,

Genesis 2:18 Now the Lord God said, “It is not good (beneficial) for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper [one who balances him—a counterpart who is] suitable and complementary for him.

GOD IS

Ladies, God is WISE

And He’s a God of order-we see it in the heavenlies, and we see it here on earth.

God wants order in your relationships.

God, when He created man, saw that man needed more than a companion man needed someone who could make Him better.

And that’s when He thought of YOU.

Coming from that then, Christian men- who really understand the role God gave them as head of the family unit- these MEN want women who can help them become better men.

GET THE FACTS

Helpmeet is a combination of two root words, one meaning “to rescue,” “to save,” -ezer and the other meaning “to be strong”-kenegdo Just as the roots merged into one word, so did their meanings.

Ezer appears twenty-one times in the Old Testament.”

In contrast, k’enegdo, another Hebrew word used in Genesis 2:18 to describe Eve, appears only once.

HELPMEET

Helpmeet means helping someone in need- it speaks of rescue or saving someone.

It DOES NOT mean servant. It doesn’t even mean subordinate.

The Bible calls Eve a helpmeet or helper in Genesis 2:18.

Helpmeet or helper comes from the Hebrew word -ezer seen above. The word means helping someone in need or rescuing someone from trouble. It means giving assistance and support in times of hardship and distress.

So, from this you can see that Eve was created by God to rescue Adam or help him because he had:

  • need/s
  • would face hardship and
  • distress
  • he had issues (I mean he was less than perfect)

Eve, just by being Woman:

  • Rescued Adam from loneliness
  • Help manage the Garden
  • Completed the sexual union and had children
  • Was joined with Adam in worship of the Lord God

God created Eve to help Adam fulfil destiny- to help him become a better man. To be a complete man.

The best Helpmeet Is A Mature Helpmeet

But to be a helpmeet is to be mature and wise.

It takes maturity to support, encourage, rescue, soothe, defend, prop up a man who is imperfect.

You are confronted by his faults and short comings every single day.

But you were purposely designed with a heart to nurture and to bring out the best in him.

Being a helpmeet is the highest form of Love.

In Genesis 22: 21-23 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

Taken out of man to walk side by side with him. To be in covenant. To receive protection and love.

Created to do life together with lives intricately intertwined.

Your Role As Helper Is a Title God uses to describe Himself

Your role as Helper is shared by God Himself!

He is your ezer. Yes, it’s true. Hear what Scriptre says about this:

Psalm 33:20 says Our soul waiteth for the LORD: he is our help (ezer) and our shield.

Psalm 30: 10 says, "Oh Lord be my helper (ezer).

Psalm 121:1-2 says, I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help (ezer). My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.

Exodus 18:4 “For the God of my father, said he, was mine help [ezer], and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh”

Deuteronomy 33:29 “Happy art thou, O Israel … saved by the Lord, the shield of thy help [ezer]”.

Psalm 70:5 “But I am poor and needy: make haste unto me, O God: thou art my help [ezer] and my deliverer”.

Psalm 115:9 “O Israel, trust thou in the Lord: he is their help [ezer] and their shield”.

Hosea 13:9 “In me [the Lord] is thine help [ezer]”.

God as helper does not make God less powerful. He remains all powerful even as helper. The woman as helper should be seen as important still.

Additionally, in the New Testament Jesus spoke of the Holy Spirit-the Helper:

I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper (John 14:16).

The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name…” (John 14:26).

It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you (John 16:7).

Being a helper is essential in the Kingdom you belong. Helping is a sign of great strength and character. As a woman it is a great privilege to be called helper; you are in excellent company.

God Brings Out The Best In You

He is the one who enables you to help so graciously and powerfully.

You don’t help because you are the servant or have a servant complex you help because you are divinely equipped and enabled to do so.

As helpmeet you are strong, versatile and efficient not subordinate or inferior. Not by any means a doormat or someone to be walked upon. Helpmeet signifies support and great influence.

As mentioned previously ezer is mentioned 21 times in the Bible- in all those times none of the references was negative.

As you partner with God- there is no helpmeet list to follow- but He will give you the opportunity to become the best helpmeet your own husband. You will have the opportunity to learn what your husband needs and then you would be better able to help him.

As a helpmeet Scripture says,

  • The wise woman builds her house” (Proverbs 14:1).
  • “I desire that the younger widows marry, bear children, manage the house” (1 Timothy 5:14).
  • “Older women…admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, homemakers” (Titus 2:3-5).

Yes, Scripture holds keeping the home in high regard. No, it doesn’t mean that is all women are called to do but if that is how you are the best ezer then do it with all you have.

Many women would want to stay home and take care of their families but are no able for many reasons-there is value and beauty in it and if that is how you help, then do it well.

You have the power to help your partner walk in victory, in purpose, in more wisdom.

Are you going to embrace your role?

Ladies, the good news is there are Christian Men who are still looking for this character in women they are searching for women who can help them be their very best while they grow in character in Christ.

So, from today the word helpmeet from Genesis 2:18 should no longer bring these thoughts to mind:

  • A word that has no relevance today?
  • A characteristic you despise?
  • A woman who has no value?
  • A woman who is a doormat?
  • A woman who is a servant?

What kind of helpmeet are you?
